Topeka Weather & Radar — Live conditions, NWS forecast & interactive Doppler radar

A new page has landed on the Jarvis Playground: a live weather dashboard for Topeka, Kansas — current conditions, the official NWS forecast, a 24-hour hourly strip, a 7-day outlook, and an interactive NEXRAD Doppler radar map with playback.

What's on the page

• Current conditions — temperature, feels-like, humidity, wind & gusts, pressure, cloud cover, UV, precipitation, visibility, and sunrise/sunset, auto-refreshing every 10 minutes.
• Official NWS forecast — the day/night periods straight from api.weather.gov for the Topeka (KTOP) grid.
• Next 24 hours — a scrollable hourly strip with temps and precipitation probability.
• 7-day outlook — daily highs/lows with a temperature range bar, rain chance, and wind.
• Doppler radar — a Leaflet map of the NEXRAD composite (via RainViewer) with a glowing Topeka marker, a play button that animates ~2 hours of history plus the 3-hour nowcast, a frame slider, and a light-to-heavy intensity legend.

Under the hood

The page is fully static — no database, no cron, no API keys. All data is fetched live in the browser from three free, keyless sources: Open-Meteo (observations + model forecast), NOAA/NWS (official forecast text), and RainViewer (NEXRAD radar mosaic). A fun engineering note: the radar mosaic only renders at map zooms 4–7, so the map is tuned to that range and the radar layer hides cleanly when you zoom in for street detail.
